My sister Laura died June 13, 1999 due to medical complications from her disease of alcoholism. I composed tunes & executive produced a CD entitled Laura in her memory.
Janet and I also donated the sale proceeds from her house to initially fund a drug/alcohol sobriety maintenance program through the YWCA called Laura’s House.
We have also helped to fund a 1 year drug/alcohol sobriety-maintenance program for approximately 15 residents at a time at Hope House, an African American church-sponsored effort.
We partnered with Mt. Tabor neighbors to purchase a former drug-distribution house that will become a Community Center. We are pleased to fund a scholarship essay contest through
the Oregon Partnership. The question posed is: Why do you think high schoolers drink or take drugs; how do you resist the temptation, and how would you discourage a friend who’s thinking about starting or who has started already? Another funding strategy involves Central City Concern.
We donated the lead gift for a drug and alcohol-free four-plex named “Laura’s Place” in addition to their existing 1000 monitored apartment units which are also free of drugs and alcohol.
We also recently had the opportunity to participate with three unique matching programs for the Sisters of the Road funding for its new Personalist Center. Our final matching gift was for Union Gospel Mission’s
LifeChange Center. We have raised a total of $1,849,000 in Laura’s memory to primarily help young women make better life-style choices than Laura did. We want Laura’s legacy to matter and
to promote the opportunity for proactive-enhanced outcomes. $1,059,000 to date in our fund-raising efforts have come from a variety of outside matching sources including an additional $257,500 in Central City Concern
pledged capital for improvements and on-site management of the Laura’s Place drug and alcohol-free four-plex.
